'In these precarious times, everything is potentially political,' writes Mary Lucia. 'With everything happening in the world now, is it your natural instinct to retreat into something safe and familiar, and stay away from mainstream or social media, or do you feel more inclined to be involved, speak up, consume everything you can get your hands on, and engage in something you feel strongly about?'

'Last night's insomnia had me pondering some big unanswered questions,' writes Mary Lucia. Among the questions keeping her up: What, exactly, is in Queen Elizabeth's purse? Mary shares her thoughts on its contents. 'Admittedly I don't have a vast knowledge of the history of the monarchy,' Mary writes. 'Helen Mirren's portrayal of the Queen and the Sex Pistols' feelings about her are about as deep as I go.'

Last year, Mary Lucia wanted to create a new holiday tradition for herself. 'That meant I wanted to spend Christmas alone in New York City,' she writes. Ryan Paul Plewacki is an insanely talented guitar player in the bands Sleep Study and The Honeydogs. Because Ryan is a Pug parent to Ringo and Starkey, Mary Lucia think the time has come to introduce the world to two of the ill-est Pugs in the Twin Cities.

This week, Mary Lucia interviews singer-songwriter and bassist, Cait O'Riordan, whose musical CV includes playing in the Pogues in the mid-1980s. Lucia and O'Riordan discuss some rules to live by, 'Insomnia Jeopardy' and a writer's sense of nostalgia, among other topics. O'Riordan also shares one of her prouder moments (it involves television and the Irish sport of hurling).

The Orwells formed in high school, and they released their debut album 'Disgraceland' in 2014. They're back with another solid rock 'n' roll album, 'Terrible Human Beings,' from which comes Mary Lucia's DJ Pick of the Week: 'They Put a Body in the Bayou.'

After watching the documentary, 'The Sad and Beautiful World of Sparklehorse,' Mary Lucia found herself thinking about artists who feel defeated by a lack of commercial success yet are worshipped by peers for that very thing.
