Sanni Brown - Host, The Message on Saturdays

Sanni Brown grew up in Chicago and moved to Minnesota in 1993. She didn’t know anybody, so the radio became her best friend. In those years, she loved Madonna, Whitney Houston, Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, and Salt-N-Pepa. As a child, Sanni learned DJing from her mother, who would come home from work on a random Friday with a six-pack of beer, a bucket of Carson's Barbecue and sit next to the radio and DJ all night. Sanni later sharpened her radio host skills on a boombox her Mama bought her by recording songs off KDWB and other Twin Cities stations and adding her own voice over the songs’ intros and outros. The rest is history.

What might surprise people about Sanni’s tastes is that she loves all good music. She could care less about genre. If you can shake your booty, bob your head, and get lost in it — that’s what matters most.  Some of her favorite artists today include Mac Irv, Nakara Forje, Reiki, Kaleem the Dream, and Huhroon. They are just a few of the local artists she's really excited about.

Sanni has been with The Current since 2018, and her highlights so far include being a part of the team that launched Carbon Sound, The Current’s stream focused on Black musical expression, and hosting the first episode of The Message, which focuses on classic hip-hop and R&B.

You can catch Sanni on-air as host of The Message from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Saturday night on The Current and on Carbon Sound from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday through Thursday at carbonsound.fm.
