The new documentary, Sly Lives (aka The Burden of Black Genius) was recently released to the streaming platform Hulu. Directed by Questlove, the doc looks at the life and legacy of Sly Stone, the leader of the band Sly and the Family Stone.

The group helped to usher in a new wave of psychedelic soul in the 1960s alongside artists like The Temptations, Isaac Hayes, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Curtis Mayfield. Today, let’s spotlight the pioneers of this funky genre.
