Coffee Break: Indigenous Peoples Day

A long-fringed shawl moves with each intentional step during the second annual Bemidjigamaag Powwow on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. Girls and women often wear handcrafted moccasins, colorful dresses as well as long-fringed shawls for the fancy shawl dance. The long fringes help emphasize movement.

October 14, 2024

The second Monday in October is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day. The holiday honors the history and contributions of people who are native or indigenous. Indigenous People’s Day was first recognized by President Biden in 2021, and the State of Minnesota officially recognized the holiday in place of Columbus Day last year.

You can celebrate Indigenous People’s Day in many ways — just check out this list from MPR News! This morning, let’s start our celebration with music.
