Coffee Break: Anything Avian

Minnesota has some new residents — baby falcons! Three peregrine falcons hatched at a monitored nest box in St. Paul last week. Unfortunately, one of the chicks didn’t make it, but the new parents, an 11-year-old female and a 15-year-old male, are busy tending to the needs of the two surviving chicks.
Hatchlings spotted on DNR FalconCam, new EagleCam in the worksYou can keep up with the new family on the Department of Natural Resources’ FalconCam.
The baby falcons are called eyasses (or eyas if it’s singular) and their white down will soon be replaced with sturdier feathers. There is still time to watch them grow, though. Eyasses don’t normally fledge — or grow feathers big enough for their first flight — until around the 30- to 45-day mark. Let’s celebrate the new peregrine falcons with music.
