Pieces of You, the debut album from Jewel, was released on this date in 1995. Whether intended or not, Jewel was at the vanguard of what has become a massive trend in music; specifically, the mononym.

While there have always been artists who took the one-name-only approach — the classics like Prince, Cher, Sting — it seems now more than ever, musicians are following the one-name model favored by Brazilian soccer players. (We’re not talking about one-word band names like Rush, but musicians who go by one name.) Just a scan of the charts, upcoming album releases, or The Current’s playlist reveals a sizeable roster of artists who perform under their own, single-word name.

So for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs by artists who perform under a mononym do you want to hear?
