Coffee Break: indie rock post-punk revival

February 09, 2024
Twenty years ago — February 9, 2004 — Glasgow band Franz Ferdinand released their self-titled debut album in the U.K. (the American release followed a month later). Described by BBC Music reviewer Simon Fernand as “a masterpiece of funky, punky, suave cool from the first track to the last,” Franz Ferdinand was the latest entry in a 2000s musical boom that embraced a return to a gritty, post-punk rock sound, joining the output of other bands such as the Strokes, the Hives, Sleater-Kinney, Les Savy Fav, the National, Arctic Monkeys, the Long Blondes and others (many of whom rode a resurgent wave of “the” band names).
Let’s reminisce and rock out to this signature noughties sound.
