Coffee Break: feels like spring

A rollerblader enjoys a warm evening as she makes her way around Lake Nokomis on March 19, 2022. Fast-forward to January 2024, and rollerblading around Minneapolis lakes seems more likely than skating on them.

A number of traditional outdoor winter activities in Minnesota just won’t happen this year — or at the very least, they will feel very different. It’s all because this Minnesota winter has been a mild one; according to MPR meteorologist Sven Sundgaard, it’s the warmest winter since 1877–78, and it looks likely that Gilded Age record is set to be broken this year.

As January comes to a close, MPR meteorologist Bill Endersen forecasts record highs. “Wednesday is likely to be memorable with record high temperatures likely,” he predicts. “Mild Pacific air and sunshine on bare ground should warm our temperatures well into the feels-like-April range.

“The current forecast high of 56°F for the Twin Cities is crazy warm for this time of winter,” Endersen continues, “and would clobber the standing record for the day of 46 degrees.”

Setting aside for a moment the possible implications of these warmer temperatures on a larger, global climate-change level, the very immediate effect of this unseasonable winter weather is that much of Minnesota feels like it typically does in spring. Let’s listen to some music to match.

So for today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that make you think of spring?
