Album of the Week: Robert Finley, 'Black Bayou'
by Mac Wilson
January 08, 2024
Black Bayou, the Dan Auerbach-produced album from 69-years-young bluesman and storyteller Robert Finley, is a journey to the bayous of Finley’s home state of Louisiana. It coalesces all the vibrant genres of gospel, blues, soul and rock into a raw, thundering tribute to the swamps.
Throughout the 11 tracks of growly vocals with a sultry falsetto, Finley tells tales of the bayou from his childhood until now, including surviving the jaws of an alligator — a true story of his grandfather using him as bait to catch an alligator when he was a child!
Black Bayou was written quickly, the parts coming together spontaneously and getting everything in one take so you get a live, intimate feel.
