Album of the Week: Cat Power, 'Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert"
December 25, 2023
Our Album of the Week is Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert by Cat Power.
In November of 2022, Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, ventured to London's Royal Albert Hall to perform a song for song recreation of Bob Dylan's famed May 1966 concert, where he switched from acoustic to electric guitar mid show. That live reverential set is The Current's Album of the Week. Cat Power Sings Dylan: the 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert.
The performance is strikingly faithful to the original so much so that you can hear one of the most famous heckles in rock history as someone shouts "Judas" near the end of the set. While quite literal, Cat Power's performance is tribute to the concert that changed the course of rock history.
From Chan Marshall’s interview with Jill Riley, on the effect Bob Dylan’s music had on her life:
“It created my job, you know? Storytelling and the passion that comes from like, seeing the world, traveling the world. That was my only goal as a little kid, I wanted to go see the world, I wanted to go to Africa and China and South America, you know? And I got to do all those things, because Bob created the job.”
