As host of Teenage Kicks — my favorite shows were the ones that featured debut and break-through albums by Teenage Kicks-era women and femme-fronted bands. They had to fight that much harder for air-play and recognition "back in the day" — and went on to inspire many of the contemporary artists we spin on The Current today — including Lene Lovich, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Madonna, Eurythmics, X-Ray Spex, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, Everything But The Girl, The Bangles, The Go-Gos, and the Pretenders. The Pretenders not only released a new album this year, but frontwoman and rock icon Chrissie Hynde celebrated her 72nd birthday with a sold-out kick-ass performance at The Entry here in Minneapolis. It was also an honor to pay tribute to artists we lost this year, including Sinead O'Connor and Tina Turner.
