This week hear new music from Caroline Polachek, Green Day, Future Islands, serpentwithfeet, beabadoobee & Laufey, and Halloween, Alaska.
Caroline Polachek — “Dang”
After releasing arguably the best album of 2023 (I’m the one arguing, I think it’s the best), Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, Caroline Polachek is back with a new song, “Dang.” Minimal and glitchy, it’s experimentation from an artist that is constantly pushing her boundaries.
Green Day — “The American Dream Is Killing Me”
Working with the same producer as their albums Dookie and American Idiot, Green Day are punky and political on the first song from their forthcoming, Saviors album, “The American Dream is Killing Me.” Aggressive and wry with their observations, Green Day is one of the few bands that can nod to their previous songs and never sound like a parody of themselves.
Future Islands — “The Tower”
Samuel T Herring’s voice has a timbre that makes every word feel full and underlined. His Baltimore band, Future Islands just shared their latest, “The Tower,” and announced a new album out next year called People Who Aren’t There Anymore. The soft and washed out tones of the song make it feel like a poem from the past. It’s a song about stories and the power they hold.
serpentwithfeet — “Damn Gloves”
The always interesting serpentwithfeet just announced a new album called Grip, which will be out February 16. There’s rush of songs coming out these days about getting onto the dance floor and a celebration of bodies in motion (and being close to other bodies). “Damn Gloves” is another dance floor leading to other things song, it’s sweaty, dark, and throbbing.
beabadoobee & Laufey — “A Night To Remember”
A dreamy, slow dance under the disco ball song from beabadoobee and Laufey. Trading vocals with light piano and jazz drums it’s a delicate, “Night To Remember,” that transitions (with swelling strings) to nearly a James Bond intro song.
Halloween, Alaska — “All The Arms Around You”
Minnesotan musicians from The Bad Plus, Love-Cars, and 12Rods teamed up in the early aughts as Halloween, Alaska to create some beautiful and moody music. Halloween, Alaska are celebrating their debut record’s 20th Anniversary with their first-ever vinyl pressing and rare show on November 24th.
