This week hear new songs from Brittany Howard, Boygenius, Mustafa, Yumi Zouma, Brigitte Calls Me Baby, and Touch Sensitive.
Brittany Howard — “What Now”
The front woman of Alabama Shakes, and recent solo artist, Brittany Howard just announced a new record and released the title track, “What Now.” She recently said, “‘What Now’ is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs. It’s never my design to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it’s a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time the lyrics are brutal.”
Boygenius — “Afraid of Heights”
As a victory lap after a year of sell-out shows, including a recent sold out show at Madison Square Garden, and their debut record being hailed as one of the best of 2023, BoyGenius put out an EP of 4 new songs. The songs continue ideas and lore from the album. Lucy Dacus leads on “Afraid of Heights,” which is full of her picture perfect metaphors.
Mustafa — “Name of God”
Besides Jack Antonoff, The National’s Aaron Dessner seems to be the go to producer these days. He recently teamed up with Toronto musician Mustafa on the gorgeous new song, “Name of God.” The song is dedicated to his brother, Mohamed, who died earlier this summer and is full of mournful thoughts after someone important is gone.
Yumi Zouma — “Be Okay”
The new song, “Be Okay,” from New Zeland band Yumi Zouma reminds me of Aimee Mann’s “Save Me.” The slow build heart bleed ballad has a beautiful breakdown with angry screams in the background and subtle distortion.
Brigitte Calls Me Baby — “Impressively Average”
The Chicago band sold out their show at 7th Street Entry and wow the audience at the Happy Hour they performed at Surly earlier this summer. They’ll be going on tour with The Last Dinner Party this fall and putting out an EP Nov. 3rd called, This House Is Made Of Corners, which they recorded with Dave Cobb (9-time Grammy winner and producer of Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell).
Touch Sensitive — “Telephone Line feat. Your Smith”
Aussie Michael Di Francesco, aka Touch Sensitive, calls himself a synth-freak and as he teams up with Minnesota’s own Your Smith on the new song “Telephone Line,” those synths are vibrant and bringing in some glitz. It’s a shimmering fun song with a nod to nostalgia.
