This week hear new music from The Replacements, Lydia Liza and Big Cats, Obongjayar, Empress Of, Bleachers, and Jean Dawson with SZA.
The Replacements — “Little Mascara”
Much has been said about the newly mixed, Let It Bleed Edition, of The Replacements Tim. The original album, muddy sound and all, was a beloved album to fans of the almost-but-not-quite-famous Minnesota rockers, The Replacements. The new mix by Ed Stasium (legendary producer/engineer for Talking Heads and Ramones) has seemingly pulled the old songs to an immediate new life.
Lydia Liza and Big Cats — “Crystal On The Line”
Lydia Liza was in high school when The Current first started spinning songs from her band, Bomba de Luz. After courting controversy with her viral feminist take on, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” she’s back with some new music. Working with friend and producer, Big Cats, she’s balancing laidback storytelling with hand claps and dance beats on “Crystal On the Line.”
Obongjayar — “Who Let Him In”
Last year, Nigerian-born musician Obongjayar released his debut album, Some Nights I Dream of Doors. This year he’s been slowly releasing new music, including the intensity building “Who Let Him In.” The driving drums and Obongjayar’s seemingly lack of needing to breath keeps the momentum going.
Empress Of — “Kiss Me feat. Rina Sawayama”
Lorely Rodriguez, who performs under the moniker Empress Of, gained critical acclaim with her debut record, Me, in 2015. Since then her star has risen even higher. For her upcoming album she teamed up with Minnesota based producer, BJ Burton, as well as John Lennox. She’s spent the last year opening on tour for Rina Sawayama, and that seemed to inspire their new song, “Kiss Me.”
Bleachers — “Modern Girl”
Jack Antonoff has been pretty busy lately with his producing jobs (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, etc), he’s so busy that you might forget he has his own band. Bleachers have returned with a sax heavy, four-on-the-floor stomper called, “Modern Girl.”
Jean Dawson and SZA — “NO SZNS”
A tease on TikTok hinted that SZA and up-and-comer Jean Dawson were working on something together. The song, “No Szns,” is a beautiful, coming of age duet that also features trumpet from yMusic co-founder CJ Camerieri.
