This week hear new music from Vagabon, Big Thief, Semisonic, SHY FX, The Moss, and Minneapolis artist rosie.
Vagabon — “Lexicon”
A little help from Rostam (Vampire Weekend, HAIM, Clairo) took Vegabon where she wanted to go on her new album, as she said in her press release, “he just got it.” Sorry I Haven’t Called (out September 15) is a more playful, sugary, and danceable album than her previous work, especially on “Lexicon.”
Big Thief — “Born For Loving You”
Another fan favorite from the Big Thief live show gets an official recording, “Born For Loving You.” Recorded while on tour in Spain, the new song will be out via 7” vinyl on October 20. A full life story in three and a half minutes in a country croon of dedication and love.
Semisonic — “Out of the Dirt feat. Jason Isbell”
A bit of beef between Jason Isbell and Dan Wilson going back to 2012 (and later recanted in 2017) where Isbell accused Wilson of “ripping off” his work has officially been taken off the flame with a new collaboration for Semisonic’s new album, Little Bit Of Sun. Isbell adds his guitar to a simple track with “a hypnotic, mesmerizing lyrical chant.”
SHY FX x Kojey Radical x Nile Rodgers — “Good Morning”
Like an iced coffee to kick off a hot summer day, “Good Morning,” from Shy FX, Kojey Radical, Nile Rodgers is the right way to wake up. It’s full of Shy FX’s joyful bouncing drums and bass with legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers creating some fills to add to the “spirit of summer” they were aiming for when they teamed up with rapper Kojey Radical.
The Moss — “The Place That Makes Me Happy”
Formed in Hawaii, The Moss carry a laidback sound with vocalist Tyke James delivering lyrics as though they hit him in the moment. Now based in Utah, the band invokes the feeling of adventure and home with their new song, “The Place That Makes Me Happy.”
rosie — “take the hint”
18-year-old Minneapolis-based songwriter rosie blends influences from pop, indie rock, and R&B. Her recent single “take the hint” builds beautifully, starting off simple with vocals and guitar then adding rich layers of production. rosie knew music was her calling after making her first song, “lilac season,” produced by a high school friend. She calls her released songs “test runs of different genres, feelings and production styles,” and is now feeling pulled in a specific direction. She notes Dominic Fike, Remi Wolf, and Dijon as her biggest influences. From her very first show in January to today, rosie has played 22 shows around the Twin Cities this year. Her next performance is Friday, Sept. 29, at the RÖK Music Lounge in St. Paul. -AD
