This week hear new songs from Death Cab for Cutie, Miguel, RAYE, Mae Simpson, Divorce, and Spill Tab.
Death Cab for Cutie — “An Arrow In The Wall”
Ben Gibbard is taking both of his bands, Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service, on the road for a dual 20th anniversary tour. It seems like he walked a fine line between the two projects with the new Death Cab for Cutie song, “An Arrow In The Wall,” a song about near misses with disaster. It’s a warning siren of a song with a club beat that thumps like a heartbeat.
Miguel — “Number 9 feat. Lil Yachty”
Miguel mixes a club banger with hushed whispers, mellow harmonies, on the first single for his fourth album, “Number 9 feat. Lil Yachty.” In a recent LA Times interview, Miguel shared that his new music is full of grief following his split from his wife and a dive into his love of genre melding.
RAYE — “Worth It.”
RAYE’s debut album, My 21st Century Blues, came out earlier this year and showcases her as an absolute natural. There’s a balance of upbeat R&B that nods to the heyday of the ‘90s. The production is flawless and RAYE’s voice is pure honey.
Mae Simpson — “Cap Guns”
Local artist Mae Simpson is one of the performers joining The Current at the Minnesota State Fair this year. The Americana leaning musician dug into her childhood nostalgia for her latest song, “Cap Guns.”
Divorce — “Birds"
English indie-rockers, Divorce, have released a new single, “Birds” a dizzying song that feels like anxiety and release. Front man, Felix MacKenzie-Barrow said, “I was carrying a lot of insecurity that felt like it was piling in on me from all angles but this song was an attempt to reshape those feelings into something positive. I wanted to remind myself and all of us in the band how much belief we have in each other and in the truth of what we’re doing together.”
Spill Tab - CRÈME BRÛLÉE!
French-Korean singer and songwriter, spill tab, is known for her quiet lo-fi sound, but she shows of a little more aggressive and guitar driven sound in “Crème Brulee!” The eclectic song jumps into trip hop, jazz, industrial guitar shrikes and distortion.
