This week hear new music from Wilco, Dessa, Peter Gabriel, Death Valley Girls, Tyler Childers, and REIKI.
Wilco — “Evicted”
Wilco are one of the most dependable bands, like a broken-in pair of blue jeans, they always fit just right. On September 29, the band will release their 13th album, Cousin. For the first time since their 2007 album, Sky Blue Sky, Wilco are bringing in a producer; this time around, it’s Cate Le Bon. Their first song, “Evicted,” takes on the Sisyphean task of convincing someone to love you when you don’t deserve it.
Dessa — “Hurricane Party”
“A disco ball dissected” is how Dessa describes her newest song, “Hurricane Party.” It’s a song inspired by the very real parties that take place as people batten down the hatches and prepare for the incoming storm, leaning into the glitter and decadence while know that the worst is still to come.
Peter Gabriel — “Road To Joy”
Dealing with isolation and a near-death experience is examined in “Road to Joy,” a surprisingly light, fluttery, and bright song from Peter Gabriel’s new album i/o. The song folds and shifts with help from co-producer Brian Eno.
Death Valley Girls — “I Am A Wave”
Nodding back to Black Sabbath and the Stooges, there’s a sluggy darkness that clings to the edges of Los Angeles band Death Valley Girls. Under the distortion and heavy drums, “The Wave” is a song of perseverance and a push to be part of the bigger picture.
Tyler Childers — “In Your Love”
The video for Tyler Childers’ new song, “In Your Love,” is a heartbreaker; don’t watch if you’re aren’t prepared for a good cry. Childers’ voice has always been one for outsiders and misfits of the country world, and this beautiful love song transcends the country lane to break him into the wider music world.
REIKI — “Chaos”
Born in Chicago, REIKI got his name after his mother was warned of a high-risk pregnancy. She was advised to try a touchless healing technique called reiki, which means “life force energy” in Japanese. After a healthy birth, REIKI started singing at three years old, kept a close relationship with his mother, and grew up to be especially attuned to his own path, purpose, and life force energy. This past July, he was one of the artists picked for First Avenue’s Rock Lottery, and he fulfilled a dream of performing on the mainroom stage.
