Minneapolis-based musician and producer Matt Latterell has released the sitcom pilot for a comedic animated series called Hamby. In addition to directing and animating the series, Latterell voices the enigmatic purple title character.

Previously, Latterell collaborated with local effects pedal company Chase Bliss to produce an animated series called Starby, which featured voice roles by Jason Isbell, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, Jeff Tweedy, and many more.

Set in the fictional Historic Downtown Woolrod Valley, Hamby’s story features the daily life of the proprietor of a Calculator Repair store. There’s some mysterious stuff afoot, but you’ll have to watch to find out what’s going on. “We made a TV show,” Hamby explains in an Instagram video earlier this year. “One episode. It’s called Hamby, after me. And it’s a normal show. Sorta like… It’s a Family or Lois the Guppie or the one where the furniture talks.”

The show features some real-life connections to Minnesota. One of the locations featured in the debut episode is a bar called Cranky’s that looks just a tad like a certain northeast Minneapolis drinking establishment.

In the pilot, some of the character voices are from the local music community, including Low’s Alan Sparhawk, Duluth-based folk singer-songwriter Charlie Parr, and Zoo Animal’s Holly Hansen. Dutch actress Carice van Houten also voices a role. IMDB has the full credits.

Hamby staged a live premiere event at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis on July 28, and the delightful episode is now streaming on YouTube.
