Early Wednesday morning, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2023 inductees. In the Performer Category, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, and The Spinners will all be inducted. Four of these seven inductees — Crow, Elliott, Michael and Nelson — will all be inducted on their first nomination, with Elliott making it through in her first year of eligibility.

The Musical Influence Award will go to DJ Kool Herc, considered one of the founders of hip hop, and to Link Wray — whose birthdate we just commemorated on Tuesday — a guitarist and songwriter credited with popularizing the use of distortion effects and power chords in rock guitar.

The Musical Excellence Award honors three additional influencers in music: Chaka Khan, an iconic R&B and funk singer who enjoyed a massive hit with the Prince-penned “I Feel for You”; Al Kooper, a songwriter, producer and musician whose work as a session player included the unforgettable organ part on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”; and Bernie Taupin, a singer and songwriter who has composed the lyrics for most of Elton John’s songs.

And the Rock Hall’s Ahmet Ertegun Award — given to “non-performing industry professionals who, through their dedicated belief and support of artists and their music, have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and music that has impacted youth culture” — will go to the late Don Cornelius, who was the creator of the music-centered TV series Soul Train, which he hosted from 1970 to 1993.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for Friday, Nov. 3, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
