This week, hear the newest songs from Low Cut Connie, PJ Harvey, and Killer Mike. Plus, check out a new collaboration between Thundercat and Tame Impala; discover London band The Last Dinner Party, and rediscover Minneapolis indie rockers 12 Rods.
Low Cut Connie, “Are You Gonna Run?”
Philly piano rockers Low Cut Connie will be putting out Art Dealers, their new album, on September 8. “Are You Gonna Run?” is a heartfelt and soulful love song about sticking it out through hard times.
Thundercat and Tame Impala, “No More Lies”
The high hat is getting a workout on the new single from Thundercat and Tame Impala. The slow jam, “No More Lies,” developed from a longtime appreciation of each other’s music. The song is a funk filled, disco of loneliness for those dancing on their own.
The Last Dinner Party, “Nothing Matters”
The five friends in The Last Dinner Party haven’t released any music yet, but they spent the last year touring around London (and will continue with dates opening for Lana Del Rey and on pretty much every festival lineup this summer). Taking inspiration from Kate Bush and David Bowie, the band’s sound is a mix of glam rock, baroque indie, and new wave, with classical flourishes. Get to know them now before they blow up.
PJ Harvey, “A Child’s Question, August”
Poetry inspired the 10th album from PJ Harvey, who wanted to create “a resting space, a solace, a comfort, a balm — which feels timely for the times we’re in.” Looking back to an epic poem Harvey wrote called “Orlam” and working with her longtime collaborators John Parish and Mark Ellis (aka Flood), the album, I Inside the Old Year Dying, features Harvey improving to create something that encapsulates the search for love.
Killer Mike, “Don’t Let The Devil” feat. El-P and thankugoodsir
It’s been a while since Run The Jewels put out some new music, so this can be seen as something to hold fans over as El-P is featured on the new song “Don’t Let The Devil” by Killer Mike. The song will be on Michael, the first solo record from Killer Mike in over a decade. Gospel chorus vocals are chopped and layered into the background as the rap reflects on the challenges of everyday life as a reminder to not let the Devil win.
12 RODS, “My Year (This Is Going To Be)”
Minneapolis indie rockers, 12 Rods, are one of those bands that get name-dropped by artists as a favorite that you may have missed on their initial run. They formed in Ohio in 1992, and band members have gone on to play with The Bad Plus; Halloween, Alaska; and The Mountain Goats. Twenty-one years since their last album, 12 Rods will be releasing a new album on July 7, If We Stayed Alive.
