Longtime actress, model and global icon Raquel Welch has died. She was 82. Her career spanned over 50 years starring in over 30 films and 50 television series and appearances. Welch’s breakthrough roles were in the 1966 films Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C., in which she solidified her status as a glamor icon. She would go on to star in many more films including 1973’s The Three Musketeers, which earned her a Golden Globe. Although Welch was best known for her glamor and pinup looks, she also took on more serious roles, like in the sports/drama film Kansas City Bomber. In the film, Welch plays a single mother who leaves her roller derby team in Kansas City to join a squad in Portland.
With derby leagues on the mind - in local news, teams of the Minnesota Roller Derby will be skating this Saturday, February 18th for the Home Team Semifinals. With the news of Raquel Welch’s passing, perhaps the skaters will channel her character’s tough energy.
