Trugoy the Dove, one-third of the hip-hop group De La Soul, has died. He was 54 years old.
Born David Jolicoeur, Trugoy the Dove formed De La Soul in 1988 alongside his high school friends, rappers Posdnuos and Maseo. De La Soul’s 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was the group’s most successful release, and it would go on to influence rap and pop communities. Countless artists have cited the trio as an important influence, including Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Tyler, the Creator, Pharrell Williams, and Damon Albarn, who enlisted Trugoy for the early Gorillaz hit “Feel Good Inc.”
De La Soul were known as part of the Native Tongues Posse, an East Coast hip-hop collective that included A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Queen Latifah, and others. Native Tongues artists were known for their positive-minded, good-natured Afrocentric lyrics, and eclectic use of sampling. De La Soul’s signature sound was born from intricately woven jazz and funk samples. Their production style has a lasting impact and influenced many other artist’s sound.
