This past Sunday, one of the world’s most prestigious surfing contests — dubbed the “Super Bowl of Surfing” — went forward in Hawaii for the first time in seven years. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held on Oahu’s North Shore, can only go forward when the surf is consistently large enough during the big-wave surfing season from mid-December through mid-March. Before this year, it had only been held nine times since the initial competition in 1984. And this year female surfers competed alongside the men for the first time in the 39-year history of the invitational. It honors legendary Native Hawaiian waterman Eddie Aikau. Luke Shepardson, a lifeguard, beat out reigning champion John Florence this year with a nearly perfect score.
It may be cold and snowing here in the Twin Cities, but the tide is right to drop in and hang loose with some fun surfing tunes. For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what surfing songs do you want to hear?
