Today is Susanna Hoff’s birthday. Hoffs founded The Bangles alongside Debbi and Vicki Peterson in L.A. in 1981. The Bangles are one of the more prominent bands of the Paisley Underground scene, which originated in Los Angeles and reached its peak in the mid-1980s. Paisley Underground bands incorporated psychedelia, rich vocal harmonies and guitar interplay, owing a particular debt to 1960s groups such as Love and the Byrds, but more generally referencing the revival of jangle pop.
Jangle pop is a subgenre of pop rock that emphasizes jangly guitars and 1960s-style pop melodies. Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, the Three O'Clock, Green on Red are a few bands who identified with the jangle pop sound of the Paisley Underground scene. Jangle pop’s influence reached beyond L.A. and into the UK and beyond with bands like The Smiths and the Go-Betweens. For today’s 9:30 Coffee Break, what jangle pop songs do you want to hear?
