Can music create a transcendental moment? If you ask anyone who loves to see bands performing music live, they would probably say it does.
Questions of music, performance, and spirituality surrounded Maggie Rogers in her parents’ home in Maine during the pandemic. During that time, she not only wrote her latest album, but finished her thesis for her master’s program at Harvard Divinity School — both titled Surrender.
You might think that would make the album lofty and cerebral. Rogers is more focused on the tangible with songs like "Want Want," about getting a little human touch, and "Be Cool," which is about indulging in self-care and ignoring grown-up responsibilities. With some help from Jon Batiste and Florence Welch, the album sounds like a ferocious quest to feel.
