Annie and the Bang Bang, “Waste of Space”
I was one of those girls, as depicted in the video, too. An isolated human in the classroom – and in society. “Get in line for the pity party. Shut up now so we can talk about me,” Annie Enneking sings with poignancy that may hit your heart strings. The melody for the lyrics is, dare I say, perfect. The video is an animated collage featuring clips of her daughter Harper as the main character surrounded by cutouts of Enneking’s friends of the same tender teen age. Catch Annie and the Bang Bang “groovin’ in the garden” this June 15 at the Como Zoo.
Raffaella, “Buick”
The best part about Raffaella’s new video, cool visual effects aside, is her mannerisms. The way she waves her fingers in front of her expressive face and then dances goofy almost as though she’s gonna tip over. It fits the endearing vibe of the pop song about intimate love. Also, when was the last time you’ve seen a band perform inside a refrigerator next to giant strawberries and red Solo cups – amiright? Raffaella will drop LIVE, RAFF, LOVE (Act I) EP August 12.
Hotline TNT, “Tie-Dye”
Hotline TNT make crunchy, melodic noise with a lo-fi profile. Their video for “Tie-Dye” fits the aesthetic with selfie-attached GoPros following the band members wandering through NYC, city parks and a tiny bedroom where they all confine together. It’s almost like one of those punk-rock families you want to be adopted into because their sound is so visceral — you can’t help but feel their hearts. Hotline TNT are on tour with Maryland-based indie rockers Snail Mail this summer.
Sophia Eris, “All Night”
In a video where there are few scenes, attention to detail is everything. Shifty camera angles/movements, focused lighting, floral detail, and the effortless swag of Sophia Eris provide a tantalizing visual for her new single “All Night.” It’s a sweet, modern hip-hop anthem for an evening out under the stars and/or the club. Perhaps the Mazda outfitted behind Sophia Eris suggests boppin’ from place to place — all night. The multi-faceted artist will be on tour with her megastar teammate Lizzo this fall, DJing the opening slot every night.
Thomas Abban, “Don’t Leave”
There are many ways that you can paint your face, do your hair, and outfit your upper body. Thomas Abban might give you some ideas on how to swoon back a lover with his new video “Don’t Leave.” Musically, the song showcases his outstanding vocal prowess. It’s also worth checking out the live version of the video, where he performs on a guitar outfitted with electronic buttons to make chords with his right hand — almost like playing an accordion. Never seen anything like it. Abban will headline the Turf Club with special guest Kokou Kah on June 25.
