“I fell in love with its sweet and simple invitation,” singer-songwriter Sarah Morris says about John Prine’s song, “I Just Want To Dance With You.” Morris had performed the song at a John Prine tribute show, and when producer Dave Mehling encouraged Morris to bring a cover song into the studio the same day she was set to record a new original, Morris knew exactly which cover song to do.
On Friday, June 3, Morris will release her cover of Prine’s “I Just Want To Dance With You” as a single, available on all streaming platforms. “The song feels like summertime when I sing it, and so we waited until Minnesota decided it might actually be summer to release it out into the universe,” Morris says.

Accompanying the single is a music video that Morris produced with the help of her children and friends. Capturing the spirit of the DIY, at-home kind of recreation people have embraced during the pandemic, the video centers on the living room of a suburban home where Morris sets up a glittery dance floor with karaoke. A child on a stepladder shines a household flashlight to create stage lighting. Carrying the spirit of the song beyond the principal location, Morris cuts to submitted footage from a number of friends dancing together in their homes. The careful viewer will spot Morris’s fellow musicians among the dancing couples, including Jillian Rae, Vicky Emerson and Doug Collins. Watch the complete video in the player above.
Sarah Morris performs at the Listening Room in Braham, Minn., on Friday, June 3, and in Delano, Minn., during the Delano Sculpture Fest on Saturday, June 4. Later this month, Morris is set to embark on a four-city Colorado tour, running June 22 to 25.
