Today is the 90th birthday of Loretta Lynn. Born Loretta Webb in 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, Loretta Lynn grew up the daughter of parents who were coal miners and subsistence farmers. At age 15, she married Oliver "Doolittle" Lynn and the couple moved to Washington State. When Loretta Lynn was 21, Doolittle bought her a guitar, and she immersed herself in learning the instrument and songwriting, going on to cut her first record in 1960. When Loretta Lynn joined the Nashville music scene, one of her friends and mentors was the late Patsy Cline.
In a career that now spans more than 60 years, Loretta Lynn has enjoyed countless hits in the country and Americana worlds, and she's also been part of many musical collaborations, sharing studios and stages with such artists as Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Jack White and Margo Price.
