New 100-foot Prince mural coming to downtown Minneapolis

Visitors to downtown Minneapolis will soon see another large-scale mural celebrating a Minnesota icon. A new 100-foot mural honoring Prince is set to debut in June on the side of the Ramp A parking garage at the southwest corner of 1st Avenue and 8th Street.
The mural will be created by self-taught hyperrealist graffiti artist Hiero Veiga, who was selected out of 60 artists considered for the project by a selection committee led by organizers Sharon Smith-Akinsanya and Joan Vorderbruggen. Prince’s family and the Prince Estate were also involved in the final decision.
“It is an honor to be selected to paint the mural of Prince,” said Veiga in a press release. “I have worked my entire life for an opportunity like this. I understand the full weight of this responsibility. This is Prince’s legacy, and I will make sure that this mural makes Prince’s family, fans, Minneapolis, and the world proud.”
Veiga is based in Florida but is a native of Brockton, Massachusetts. He has been spray-painting since he was 12 years old. With more than 21 years of experience, he has evolved from writing graffiti to curating hyper-realistic pieces ranging from portraits and natural scenery to psychedelic art.
“Downtown Minneapolis is family to Prince and me. Our parents met there. This mural means so much,” said Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson in the release.
Veiga will begin work on May 16, and the finished mural will be revealed during a June 2 block party in downtown Minneapolis that is part of Prince Celebration 2022 activities.
The process to develop this mural began for Smith-Akinsanya and Vorderbruggen in 2015, the same year Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra’s Bob Dylan mural debuted in Minneapolis. Vorderbruggen, chair of the Minneapolis Arts Commission and former director at Hennepin Theatre Trust, has overseen the creation of six murals in Downtown Minneapolis, including the Dylan mural.
A close friend of Prince’s family, Smith-Akinsanya is CEO of the Rae Mackenize Group, Inc., and Prince’s former marketing manager. “Even though it’s been seven years of working toward this, Joan and I could never just walk away and give up,” said Smith-Akinsanya in the release. “Prince deserves to be honored by his hometown.”
