March Music Madness: Best Albums of 1992
March 08, 2022
Update (3/18/22): March Music Madness 2022 is in the books! Your champion is R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People. Check out the bracket results below (click “View Full Bracket”). Thanks to everyone who participated. We’ll see you back here next year.
The return of March Music Madness is a throwback to the 1990s — 1992, to be specific. It’s hard to believe it was 30 years ago that Mall of America opened, the Metrodome hosted the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, and CDs were absolutely everywhere.
It’s exciting to revisit the music of 1992 with fresh eyes and ears. Sure, there’s plenty of grunge and alternative rock. We also found out what “Smells Like Nirvana” meant. There was also also so much hip-hop and alt-country, as well as Minnesota musicians who had international hits, influential movie soundtracks, and more. How will Rage Against the Machine fare against Ween? Will it be k.d. lang or PJ Harvey who advances?
Between Tuesday, March 15, and Friday, March 18, we’ll play songs on-air as part of each daily matchup. Every day, from 8 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., we’ll open a new matchup for voting every half hour. At the end of the day on Friday, we’ll announce the top album of 1992, as voted by The Current’s listeners.
