Okay, theme time.
Maybe you heard, but there is a relatively significant football game happening tomorrow. With the Super Bowl commanding our collective attention, I thought we’d get the regional rivalries started early. Ohio and California are two states with incredible music histories, and there will be a lot to celebrate as they square off in a musical showdown.
It’d be easy to think that California would stomp out Ohio quickly in the music world because there’s so many great scenes from so many different eras: jam bands, the vanguard of country music, hip-hop innovators, punk-rock evangelists — it’s all happening in California. But don’t count Ohio out! Bands like The Ohio Players, Bootsy and Catfish Collins, Dazz Band and more make the argument for Ohio being one of the premier states for funk innovations. And take a look at Dayton, Ohio! Population 137,644, but it’s home to: The Breeders, Guided by Voices, John Scofield, Billy Strayhorn and Roger Troutman. On a per capita basis, Dayton boasts the most talent in America.
Also, did California ever make something as cool as Devo? The answer might be no.
So chime in with some requests from the Buckeyes or the Redwoods! Make your request for this week’s Radio Free Current in the comments below.
