We’re pleased to premiere a new rendition of John Mark Nelson’s “Bright.” Also, check out new Minnesota music videos from Ricki Monique, Stacked Like Pancakes, Mac Irv, and the Orange Goodness. Do you know a Minnesota music video you’d like to see featured in the biweekly Friday Five? E-mail fridayfive@mpr.org.

John Mark Nelson, “Bright”

John Mark Nelson was born in California, then moved to Minnesota when he was young and came up in our music scene starting with the release of his 2011 debut album, Still Here. He’s been spending time back in the Golden State recently (working with Dan Wilson on projects involving artists like Taylor Swift, Mitski, and Leon Bridges), but he’s still rooted here and we’re pleased to premiere a new rendition of his latest single, “Bright.”

The original version of “Bright” was recently released as the lead single to Nelson’s forthcoming EP Hideaway, due out on April 8. The new rendition is part of the “Live With” series from Foreword, “a video and photo Production Studio out of St. Paul, Minnesota, with a primary mission of serving the community. They have a diverse clientele of artists, small businesses, non-profits and corporations.”

The studio notes, “if you’re a band/musician and interested in the creation of your own feature, don’t hesitate to contact bobby@foreword.co.”

Ricki Monique ft. yourbeautifulruin, “Immortal”

Ricki Monique is a Minnesota writer, storyteller, organizer, creative…and, not least, a musician. Her warm, honest, and absorbing track “Immortal,” a collaboration with yourbeautifulruin, has a beautiful Charles Fatunbi video that spotlights the artist, as the lyrics have it, searching for her best life. Wherever her search leads her next, we’ll be listening.

The Orange Goodness, “Settle Up Settle Down”

If you’ve been around the Minneapolis art scene for a minute, you’ll recognize the location of the video for “Settle Up Settle Down,” a track of the Orange Goodness’s debut EP Flying Under the Radar of Chaos. It’s the House of Balls, where director Drew Kinkade let his camera roam as the members of the “groove-infused alt/indie rock band from Minneapolis” get friendly with the locals. Later this month, the Orange Goodness will head southeast to play the Big Turn Music Fest in Red Wing.

Mac Irv, “Mirror”

Director Gerard Victor helms a video that amplifies the encouraging message behind Mac Irv’s new song “Mirror” - featuring perhaps the greatest 50 Cent interpolation in the history of Minnesota music. The Minneapolis emcee, who’s been building a national following for nearly a decade now, calls this “my best song yet.” Today, “Mirror” is The Current’s Song of the Day.

Mint Condition, “Breakin’ My Heart”

You’re not wrong: Mint Condition’s song “Breakin’ My Heart” dates from the dawn of the Clinton administration. The vintage jam from the St. Paul R&B stars, which hit the top ten in 1992, has surprised even the band members by going viral on TikTok, where a sped-up version of the track has soundtracked over half a million video clips. The band’s lead singer Stokley Williams, who’s currently focusing on his solo career during a band hiatus, tells the Star Tribune he’s only watched about a hundred of the TikTok videos: “I don't have that much time in the day.” Those hits don’t write themselves!
