Minnesota holiday music: 89 songs to add local flavor to your celebrations

The joy of the holidays lies in mixing old and new, near and far. Your holiday soundtrack is probably going to include icons like Mariah Carey (pride of the Empire State) and Perry Como (Keystone State, represent), and that’s as it should be…but when you’re ready to switch it up, dive into this playlist of 89 holiday songs by Minnesota artists.
Okay, in a couple of cases we included songs about Minnesota characters like Snoopy (as celebrated by the Royal Guardsmen) and Tom Waits’s famous sex worker, narrator of what’s likely the all-time most-covered song with “Minneapolis” in the title. But almost all of the artists singing seasonal songs on this playlist are from the Gopher State - including, of course, Grand Rapids girl Judy Garland, whose “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” closes the playlist.
The opening track is one of my personal favorites: a winter fresh version of the timeless jam “Funkytown,” remade by Lipps Inc. mastermind Steven P. Greenberg as part of a 2016 project in which he also created metal, reggae, klezmer, and other interpretations of the well-known earworm.
The rest of the playlist ranges from contemplative (“Just Like Christmas” from Low’s classic 1999 holiday EP) to cutting (Prince’s “Another Lonely Christmas”) to contemprary (Now, Now’s gorgeous synthpop “Lonely Christmas”).
The tracks go as far back as the heyday of Minneapolis’s own Andrews Sisters, who became bright voices of holiday joy in wartime and all time. Whoopie John Wilfahrt represents the rich history of Minnesota’s old-time music scene, while the Trashmen (“Dancin’ With Santa”) remind us that Twin Town garages rock all year ‘round.
While we didn’t go so far to count John Denver as a Minnesotan (though he spent a more meaningful chunk of his career here than you might have realized), we weren’t dogmatic about the need to be born and raised in the Gopher State. Unfortunately the Waterbury All-Stars’ “Christmas in Minneapolis” (featuring Lizzo back when the name of her local trio the Chalice was more of a draw than her own name) isn’t on Spotify, but there are seasonal tracks from Minnesota transplant Brian Setzer (“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”) and one of our greatest gets, Sisqó (“Perfect Christmas”).
The playlist also represents Minnesota’s deep gospel, jazz, and classical music traditions. The legendary voice of Robert Robertson warms “The Christmas Song,” Charles Lazarus lights a fire under “Frosty the Snowman,” and the performers of St. Olaf College (who annually present one of Minnesota’s hugest holiday shows) sing the South African hymn “Haleluya! Pelo Tsa Rona” (“Hallelujah! We Sing Your Praises”).
There are many more delights for you to discover here, from big names like the Jets and Lorie Line to emerging artists like Rachel Bearinger and Tacky Annie. The penultimate track is perhaps the most meaningful to me personally: Donna Peña, an Inver Grove Heights singer and composer of Mexican and Cherokee heritage, performed at my parents’ living-room wedding in 1974. Here, from her 1994 album Diciembre en México, she sings a Spanish-language version of “Silent Night.”
