Spoon will release its 10th album, Lucifer on the Sofa, on February 11, 2022. The first song from the collection is “The Hardest Cut.”
Frontman Britt Daniel debuted the track and album with The Morning Show’s Jill Riley. Here are the highlights from their conversation:
“The Hardest Cut” origins
We did a tour in the summer of 2019. And during that tour, we decided we wanted to make a record in Texas. I hadn't lived full time in Texas in a long time, and so I moved back. [Keyboardist/guitarist Alex Fischel] moved over from California that fall. This was the first song we wrote. It kind of has a “Texas highway” rock riff to it. We called it “Texas Riff” before we had a title. Then I ended up writing a song about a long-term situation relationship that was hard to let go of. It was an unhealthy relationship, but knowing it was unhealthy didn't make it any easier to let go of. That's why it was “The Hardest Cut.”
On Minneapolis
Yeah, it is one of our best cities. And I don't know, I mean, I love a lot of things. But Minneapolis, the music from there, of course, is some of my absolute favorite in my life. And you know, I mentioned I gave Minneapolis a shout out in a song once, and something happened. We get to come back more and more often, and that's great.
