Fresh off of being named Artist of the Year at the Americana Honors and Awards show in Nashville and the release of her memoir, which topped the New York Times bestsellers list earlier in the year, Brandi Carlile is back with her 7th album. Perhaps writing the book inspired In These Silent Days, with all those memories in the front of her mind.
It doesn't take long to discover that Brandi is a fan of artists like Joni Mitchell and Elton John, whose influence is all over the album. The first single and first song, "Right on Time," sets the tone on this classic Brandi piano-driven tune with its gorgeous arrangement. Her incredible vocals pack a punch, and the song soars to great heights.
"Broken Horses" has a distinct Elton John Tumbleweed Connection feel, even reminiscent of Poco, with it's early 70's country rock sound. This one is my favorite, and it's one of the album's highlights. Another is "Sinners, Saints and Fools," with its lush strings and powerful vocals--an epic ride with many twists and turns. Very 70's Elton! I also love the song "Stay Gentle," which sounds like motherly advice to her kids, delivered with Beatles-like harmonies.
Speaking of Joni, Carlile will perform the legendary Blue album at Carnegie Hall in New York in November. In the album's second tune "You and Me On the Rock," featuring the band Lucius, you can hear hints of Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," and "A Case of You."
Brandi Carlile continues to grow as an artist and a performer. It's been fun to watch her rise, as she is clearly an artist who enjoys her craft. In these Silent Days is the work of an artist at the top of her game. In this flavor of the week Instagram world, it's nice to see an artist make a timeless classic.
