In 2018, JD McPherson released Socks, an album of original holiday songs that quickly found a place among the canon of beloved holiday music.
When he visited us in studio in December 2018, McPherson shared that he once told himself he would never make a Christmas album. But something else was bubbling under the surface. "I'm a Christmas fanatic," McPherson says. "I loved it from the first moment I saw it. You know, I might have a thin veneer of cynicism about me, but on the inside, I'm 100 percent Charlie Brown Christmas."
This year, McPherson has released a new holiday song, "Red Bows (For a Blue Girl)," released as a single by New West Records b/w "Holly, Carol, Candy & Joy," a track off Socks. "Red Bows (For a Blue Girl)" was The Current's Song of the Day for December 19.
Back in the Twin Cities for a show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, McPherson stopped in for a conversation with Mac Wilson, ahead of which McPherson shared a list of songs that provided inspiration for creating original Christmas tunes.
