Michigander bring their music and home-state pride to The Current studio

The 2019 EP from Michigander — the music project helmed by Jason Singer — is called Where Do We Go From Here. Singer says the title suggests the thoughts he once had about quitting music altogether. Fortunately, Singer stuck with it. "Ten years ago, I saw Pete [Yorn] open for Coldplay in Detroit, and that was my very first show ever," Singer says. "And so now, 10 years later, I'm on tour with him. So that's like, a full-circle, pretty neat, inspirational moment."
While on that very tour, Michigander — Singer and collaborator Jake LeMond — visited The Current studio for a session hosted by Jade.
With a name like Michigander, the band members proudly embrace their roots. Singer recalls growing up in Midland, Mich., and being inspired to play guitar after watching a friend's brothers bootleg VHS tapes of the White Stripes in concert in Detroit. "It was pretty cool to think some band from Michigan — and not from California or New York — is a real rock band," Singer remembers thinking. "It just never registered with me before that, so that was pretty significant."
Although Michigander's sound is not similar to the White Stripes, Jason Singer shares Jack White's passion for live performance. "There's no better feeling than playing live," Singer says. "If no one knows the songs, that's still cool, but if people know the songs, it's just, like, unbelievable."
