There's a pragmatic reason musician Laetitia Tamko goes by the artist name Vagabon. "The reason I called my music project 'Vagabon' stems more from me not wanting people to say my name wrong," she laughs.

But there's something deeper to it. "Where I'm from, Cameroon, still feels like home even though I haven't been home in nine years," Tamko explains. "It still is that place in my heart that I imagine when people talk about 'home,' that's the space that it occupies for me. And of course, New York is also home, but I would say that I tend to talk about home a lot and trying to find it, and sometimes it's a physical place and sometimes it's like how do I just feel comfortable every day … it's a lot of oscillating between those two ideas of home. Sometimes I feel like I've found it, and sometimes I'm still looking."

Is there a place where Vagabon does feel grounded? "There's comfort for me in performing and there's comfort in being on tour," she says. "This is where I have found the most comfort and the most sense of home, is through music."

Currently on tour in support of her self-titled album, Vagabon is in town to open for Angel Olsen at First Avenue, but not before she stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Jade. Use the audio player above to listen to the complete session.
