Melina Duterte, better known by her artist moniker Jay Som, grew up in Los Angeles, her parents Filipino immigrants whose Tagalog language provided the basis for Jay Som's latest album, Anak Ko, which means "my child."
After playing a show at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis, Jay Som and her band visited The Current studio for a session hosted by Mac Wilson.
Anak Ko is Jay Som's fourth studio album. She burst onto the scene as a DIY artist, releasing music she recorded at home, playing all the instruments. Since then, Jay Som has gone on to produce other artists. Meanwhile, her own production methods have become more formalized. "I feel like I'm still adjusting, but it was a little easier this time," she says of recording what became Anak Ko. "I feel like I'm getting better and have more time."
Long term, Jay Som sees a future for herself that leans more toward music production versus touring. "I'd rather record all the time; I really want a studio," she says. "Maybe in the future."
