The Current's Guitar Collection: Mary Timony of Ex Hex, Koll Guitar Co. Duo Glide
by Luke Taylor

Ex Hex recently visited The Current studio to play songs from their brand-new album, It's Real. After the session, the band's Mary Timony took some time to tell us about the cool guitar she was playing during the set.
What kind of guitar is this?
It's made by Saul Koll. He's a builder in Portland, Oregon, and he is awesome.
I'm super into this thing. It's got a Mastery bridge, which I really like. These are TV Jones pickups, humbuckers. And the body is chambered; it's really light actually.
It plays really, really easily. It sounds like the best guitar I've ever had. I just like it a lot.
And Saul Koll built this for you?
Actually, he made me one last year. We used it on our record a lot, and then I got really excited about something, stood up really fast and — I've never done this before, but — I knocked the guitar face-first on the floor and the headstock broke off! But he's going to build a new neck for me, which is nice. In the meantime, he let me borrow this one, but it's very similar to the one he made for me.
How did you find Saul Koll Guitars?
A friend of ours works with Gary Hustwit, who does promo for him. Gary Hustwit is this really cool filmmaker who made that movie Helvetica, and he made Rams; he is friends with Saul, and they work together — Gary helps Saul with promo. So Gary approached a few artists to have them play Saul's instruments. So now I'm friends with Gary and have this cool guitar.
What struck you about it when you tried it out?
It just sounds really good. We ended up using it on the recording a lot because it just sounds really, really, really good; like, just better than every other guitar I have. So that's really why I want to use it all the time, just the sound of it.
