Winnipeg is roughly 60 miles from the U.S. border, but this week marked a first for Winnipeg rock band Silence Kit. "This is the first time we've played in the United States at all," says Silence Kit's Mannon Smalley, explaining that the visit involved some time sorting out the band members' work visas. "Our bassist, James [Stallan], is originally from Australia, so it was a little bit of a tricky thing for him, but it worked out."

Silence Kit are one of three acts — along with Minneapolis's Lady Lark and Milwaukee's Zed Kenzo — participating in the Midwest Music Exchange, a music-scene-swapping endeavor that arises from a collaboration among The Current, Manitoba Music and Radio Milwaukee. All three bands perform gigs in one another's cities, beginning with Winnipeg on Tuesday, April 9, Minneapolis on Wednesday, April 10 and concluding Friday, April 12 in Milwaukee. After Wednesday's show at Icehouse in Minneapolis, Silence Kit — vocalist Smalley, bassist Stallan, guitarist Natalie Smith and drummer Mike Pascucci — stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Mark Wheat.

The Midwest Music Exchange is a harbinger of what's to come for Silence Kit. "We're making plans to tour the States, actually," Smalley says.

"Yes," Smith adds, "we're looking into visas and all that fun stuff."
