Hayes Carll plays songs from 'What It Is' live in the studio

None'ya. Tend'ya. Mind'ya … these were new words in Hayes Carll's vocabulary when he met Allison Moorer. Alison grew up saying these phrases (slang for "none of your business," "tend your business," and "mind your business," respectively) in southern Alabama. Carll says his literary and artistic collaboration with his partner has been a great influence on his new record, What It Is — and especially the single, "None'ya." This record has an entirely different feel than Carll's last few, and he says it's largely because he's in a better place now emotionally, adding that bouncing ideas off of Moorer has been spurring his creativity.
Hayes Carll says his personal Mount Rushmore of songwriters has always been Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson and John Prine, but having the sound advice of this album's co-producers — Allison Moorer and Brad Jones (who produced two earlier records for Carll) — has given this record a fresh sound.
Hayes Carll and his band pulled into the Radio Heartland studio recently to set up and play some songs from the new album.
