Today, Euan Kerr of the Cube Critics podcast joins us for a discussion of the Oscars.
At the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, it was a big night for music — including in the top category, with Green Book winning Best Picture. The movie, about the real-life relationship between African-American pianist Don Shirley and his white driver touring the deep south in 1962, has been criticized by Shirley's family, who say it's misleading. It's also earned the ire of critics like the New Yorker's Richard Brody, who calls it "regressive" regarding attitudes toward race.
In a big night for music in movies, the hostless show opened with Queen performing "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." Adam Lambert handled Freddie Mercury's lead vocals for the opener, and the Oscar for Best Actor went to Rami Malek for his portrayal of Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Best Original Song went to "Shallow," the song from A Star Is Born that stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed live as a duet for the first time.
Best Original Score went to Ludwig Göransson for Black Panther, although Kendrick Lamar and SZA said they were unavailable to perform "All the Stars," their Oscar-nominated song from that film. The ceremony also had a Prince tribute in the form of Spike Lee's outfit; Lee won his first-ever competitive Oscar, for the BlacKkKlansman screenplay.

Peter Frampton announces farewell tour
Peter Frampton has announced what he's calling a farewell tour. The 68-year-old singer-songwriter says he's been diagnosed with a degenerative muscle disease that will ultimately affect his ability to play guitar and move about the stage. The English-American artist landed six Top 40 hits during his late '70s heyday, but he's best-known for 1976's Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the best-selling live albums ever. His upcoming tour kicks off June 18 in Tulsa, running for dozens of dates before wrapping up in San Francisco on Oct. 12. (New York Times)
Transgender soul pioneer Jackie Shane dies at 78
Soul singer Jackie Shane, a transgender pioneer whose career started in Toronto in the '60s and faded away until a recent rediscovery, has died at her home in Nashville at age 78. Although she identified as a woman, she was publicly referred to as a man during her early career, which included a number two Canadian hit with "Any Other Way" in 1963. In the early '70s, Shane moved to the United States and left her music career, only to be rediscovered in 2017 when the Numero Group issued a Grammy-nominated anthology of her music.
Shane said she was proud to be regarded as an inspiration. "I do believe that it's like destiny," she told the CBC recently. "I really feel that I have made a place for myself with wonderful people. What I have said, what I have done, they say it makes their lives better." (New York Times)
Viral moment: Cher tweets about Joe...but which Joe?
The ever-newsworthy music icon Cher has gone viral...with a single word. A couple of weeks ago, she just tweeted the name "Joe." That's it. Just...Joe. But who? Why? What? The tweet now has thousands of retweets, and over 2,500 replies. One of them is from Joe Jonas, who answered, "Yes queen?" Others made jokes about Taylor Swift's boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn.
Some referenced movies, and some referenced songs...including one that got a response from Cher herself. When someone tweeted about Jimi Hendrix singing "Hey Joe," Cher responded, "Hung out with him for a little while one nite." Well! (BuzzFeed)
