Larkin Poe perform in The Current studio

Sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell have performed as Larkin Poe since 2010. As they were preparing their fourth full-length album, they really took note of how they were assembling their own demos. It was at that point they decided to self-produce their 2018 release, Venom & Faith. "We knew we wanted to self-produce at some point, so we thought why not go in and be self-reliant?" Megan recalls. "We were already producing the tracks in the way we are envisioning them, so it was a really organic process."
Larkin Poe (the band is named for the sisters' four-times-great-grandfather) has as its nucleus the sisters' singing and Megan's guitar and Rebecca's lap-steel. They've toured across the country as opening acts for such artists as Keith Urban, Elvis Costello, and Bob Seger. It was during their tour with Seger that Larkin Poe stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Jade.
"I think the hardest thing to do as an artist [is] opening up for an artist on their own stage and you know those aren't your fans," Megan says, "and so you walk onstage with a deep humility but also a willingness to be vulnerable with that, and really go out of your way to bring people in. I think if people see that you are open and you're asking them to join you on a journey, they're far more likely to come with. … We just do our best to party hearty and give 'em songs, you know?"
Being sisters in a band poses its own challenges, but according to the Lovells, those challenges are exceeded by the positives. "We share everything in our life, because not only are we business partners and creative collaborators onstage every night, we share hotel rooms; we share families," Megan reflects. "We get off tour and go to Thanksgiving and there she is. And we share everything in that way and we have to be careful and protect our relationship as sisters because that is the foundation upon which everything else is built."
"There's nothing more special than being able to share this with a sister," Rebecca says. "That family connection is amazing."
