The members of boygenius — Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — don't think of themselves as a supergroup. "I like just 'group'," Baker says, "because I feel like that fits more with the ethos of this having no demand or specific hyper-expectation around it."

The three artists had been booked on tour together, and it was from that circumstance, buoyed by their mutual friendship, that the group boygenius was born. They gathered in the studio to record six tracks that became boygenius's self-titled EP. "We've all been so busy with our own projects that all we could muster was five days in the studio," Bridgers says. "It's pretty insane that we have six songs. So I hope to do more in the future, but that is what we did."

"It's six exceptional songs instead of 10 tracks with maybe some hit-or-miss tracks," Baker adds. "I think scarcity or rarity creates value and can make something special. It's so special to me because it happened in such an unbelievable way. I truly cannot believe that we were all able to intersect our orbits at just the right time and get it done in time for this tour."

While on tour together, each musician performs her own set, and then the encore comprises the boygenius set. Ahead of their show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, boygenius stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Mac Wilson.

To hear Baker, Bridgers and Dacus explain it, one of the joys of boygenius is not only the fact that the band came together spontaneously and serendipitously, but also that they really enjoy working and performing together. "I believe in these songs even more so because they're Phoebe's and Julien's songs, too," Dacus says. "And I'm a fan of theirs, so I can hype this project more comfortably than my own stuff. And it's just a lot of fun, too. It's like a third of the pressure but three times the payoff."
