One of Natalie Prass's favorite activities is reorganizing her apartment. Located in Richmond, Va., it's a neat space furnished with time-honored items. Perhaps because she's so often away from home, she likes to spend her downtime changing up the space.

It's not just her apartment that takes on different forms; Prass's sound has shifted since her 2015 self-titled debut. Piano and jazzy percussion still take center stage, but The Future and the Past is noticeably less afraid to clap back.

That's partly because the 2016 presidential election prodded Prass to change up her second project. She had a batch of songs ready for the album but replaced several after November, writing "Sisters" and "Ship Go Down" in response to the votes her city and country cast. In album opener "Oh My," she sings, "I can't believe the things I hear/ Oh, what is truth and what is fear?/ Oh, what is lying to a cheat?/ And what is freedom for the free?"

Between performances of "The Fire," "Lost," and "Short Court Style," Prass and Mark Wheat talk about these and more topics, such as music videos, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and Prass's collaborations with Matthew E. White. Use the audio player above to enjoy the whole session or individual songs.
