When you enjoy an album by an artist enough to hope that the next album will be similar, that's a good thing. And that's what I hoped for and received when Olivia Chaney's new album, Shelter, came out this summer. As on her previous solo record, Shelter sounds like a collection of old English folk tunes with sparse instrumentation and lovely vocals, even though the songs are largely original compositions. But this album came after two entirely different projects finding Chaney collaborating on the Grammy-nominated release with the Decemberists called Offa Rex, and another collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens, Sam Amidon, Natalie Merchant and the Kronos Quartet.

More of the same? Yes and no. And that's a good thing.

Olivia Chaney and her longtime musical partner Jordan Hunt pulled into the Radio Heartland studio to play songs and to discuss the new album.
