Theft of the Dial: Liz Phair
by Jade and Luke Taylor
June 08, 2018
Liz Phair's debut album, Exile in Guyville, came out 25 years ago, and it was a punch in the face to the male-dominated music world of the '90s. Matador Records recently released a deluxe remastered edition of the album, which includes Phair's Girly Sounds demo tapes.
Phair is currently on tour in support of the rereleased Exile in Guyville, and before her show at the Turf Club in St. Paul, she stopped at The Current for a Theft of the Dial, taking over the airwaves from Jade.
It turns out Phair is no stranger to The Current; it's available on 89.3 HD2 in Los Angeles, where Phair resides. "I listen to The Current all the time when I'm driving and I need a little motivation," she says.
For her Theft of the Dial, Phair prepared a very special playlist. "I picked a bunch of my favorite songs that I thought made a nice little collection," she says, "but then I thought, 'Why not search for remixes of those songs?' -- that still had the integrity of the original … So it's not a cover, but it's an homage. I like to add that little something extra."
