To be clear, Lake Street Dive didn't "self produce" their latest album, Free Yourself Up. "We produced each other," says drummer Mike Calabrese. "And there really is no better producer for us as individuals than the other members of the band. If we had some self-doubt, it went away quickly as we started eliciting these really great performances and arranging ideas from one another in the studio."

In town for a sold-out show at the Palace Theatre, Lake Street Dive — drummer Calabrese, vocalist Rachael Price, bassist Bridgette Kearney, keyboardist Akie Bemiss and guitarist Mike "McDuck" Olson — stopped at The Current's studio for a session hosted by Mac Wilson.

Calabrese says all the band members are "capable of a very high bar of playing and part-writing" as well as arranging.

One place that seems particularly in evidence is with the song "Good Kisser." Bassist Brigette Kearney explains how the song's structure is the product of collaboration. "The song form is quite unusual; there's not traditional verse in the way that it happens multiple times; there's more like two bridges, I guess," Kearney explains. "A lot of our process for this record was with co-writing with one another, and because we did that, I think we became open to less conventional song forms. … The cowriting led us to different places and being open to different song forms, and with 'Good Kisser,' that was kind of like something that had benefitted from the co-writing process."
