Singer-songwriter Johnsmith performs at Radio Heartland

Johnsmith has been doing the singer-songwriter thing for a while, and that's a good thing. He's recorded several albums over the past three-plus decades with guest appearances from some of his Nashville friends. But he's a down-home guy, a self-described hippie, a birdwatcher and a grandfather. He lives in a 19th-century home in lovely Trempealeau, Wis., watching the mighty Mississippi roll by and bald eagles build nests in his tall white pines.
John's latest album, Ginkgo, came out this spring, and he's been very busy traveling all over the country spreading his music. He'll be returning to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas soon, where he was a prestigious New Folk Winner several years ago for his songwriting. This year, John is among the faculty for the 2018 Kerrville Folk Festival Songwriters' School, a workshop that takes place concurrently with its namesake music fest.
Johnsmith stopped by the Radio Heartland studio to chat and play some songs from Ginkgo.
